Nonprofit managed care organization CareSource has finalized its acquisition of Commonwealth Care Alliance (CCA), a nonprofit healthcare services organization that offers health plans and care delivery programs designed for people with pressing health needs.
CCA will continue to operate its Senior Care Options (SCO) and One Care plans along with its clinical delivery programs under the CareSource Family of Brands, the companies said.
Its members and patients will continue to receive disability-focused care and coordination from their same care teams and providers, which CCA said will be enhanced by CareSource's capabilities.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
WHAT'S THE IMPACT
CCA insures nearly 50,000 Massachusetts residents who are dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid. Most of its members live with significant physical and behavioral health needs, and the companies said they're also more likely to experience social barriers to good health such as housing instability, food insecurity and lack of transportation than those enrolled in traditional Medicare and Medicaid.
In addition, CCA delivers specialized primary care to approximately 1,100 people through its clinics in Springfield and Boston as well as its home-based primary care practice. CCA's clinical programs include a respite care unit providing short-term crisis stabilization for members with acute behavioral health and/or substance use disorder.
The benefits of affiliation, said CareSource, include sharing resources and expertise, along with specialized programs that are expected to facilitate stronger care coordination and access to a support network.
Employees of CCA will now be part of CareSource, with the latter saying it's actively aligning and engaging cross-functional teams. CCA President and CEO Chris Palmieri is departing from the organization as part of a long-planned transition.
THE LARGER TREND
CareSource completed another acquisition in January, when it nabbed Common Ground Healthcare Cooperative (CGHC), the only insurer to have continuously served the Affordable Care Act marketplace in Eastern Wisconsin since 2014.
The new affiliation will enhance the way the organizations serve their members, CareSource said. CGHC's operational capabilities and service offerings across the state will gain from CareSource's knowledge of government-sponsored managed care in Wisconsin.
