In late December 2025, the Food and Drug Administration approved Novo Nordisk’s once-daily Wegovy pill, the first oral GLP-1 medicine for weight loss management in the United States.
The pill has since fully launched at a direct cost to consumers of $149 a month for a 1.5-mg starter dose. The pill, as are the injectable GLP-1s, is prescription-only, with insurance coverage remaining inconsistent.
But taking a daily pill – as opposed to a weekly injection – and the relatively low initial starting price have made the Wegovy pill attractive to many.
“I think people will seek this on their own,” said Dr. Amy Bucher, chief behavioral scientist at Lirio.
However the pill should not be seen as a magic bullet for weight loss, said Bucher, who has published the book, “Engaged: Designing for Behavior Change.”
There’s more that goes into the pill’s effectiveness, and that comes down to Bucher’s field of study: behavioral science.
When the right ingredients come together, consumers, she said, “should be able to emerge on the other side healthier than they started.”
For more on Bucher’s insights, please listen to her conversation with Susan Morse, executive editor of Healthcare Finance News.
Talking Points:
A missing ingredient to the GLP-1 demand has been behavioral change support.
Without behavioral change, most people will go back to their original weight after discontinuing the pill.
Price transparency and more flexible access through a pharmacy or digital channels are advantages of a direct-to-consumer model.
There’s a learning experience during the time a person is on a GLP-1 medication.
People need to pay attention to side effects, such as a feeling of fullness halfway through a meal.
Behavioral changes are needed for better outcomes and to help avoid side effects.
Consumers should prioritize protein and fiber and physical activity such as weightlifting to avoid a reduction in lean muscle mass.
People who discontinue the drug but continue with other healthy habits have better outcomes in keeping weight off.
As a behavioral scientist, Bucher’s work is to understand human behavior. Behavioral health specialists have more clinical training.
Physicians she has talked with say they feel a sense of empowerment in being able to offer something to their patients that may work for them.
