Jefferson Health is launching a multi-year improvement project to modernize its facilities and technology, with the initial focus centering on Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) and Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital – two of Philadelphia's busiest Level I Trauma Centers.

The investments aim to improve the patient experience and create a more modern environment for patients, visitors and clinicians, Jefferson Health said.

Jefferson Health President Dr. Baligh R. Yehia said these upgrades are just the beginning of a long-term vision to establish more patient-centered care in the region.

"By integrating leading-edge technology, enhancing infrastructure, and listening to the voices of our patients and staff, we are laying the foundation for the future of care," said Yehia.

WHAT'S THE IMPACT

As part of the project, TJUH will undergo an emergency room expansion featuring redesigned treatment bays, an expanded entrance, and a renovated waiting room, with construction set to begin this summer.

TJUH will also receive a new 30-bed medical-surgical unit, which is expected to ease pressure on the emergency room.

Concurrent with these improvements, Jefferson Einstein will use its recently opened 20-bed observation unit, which aims to improve efficiency by streamlining ER and inpatient flow. The trauma waiting room has already been completed, and the trauma bays are in the midst of being expanded.

The hospital will also begin implementing the EPIC electronic health record system, which is expected to further streamline care. Project design is underway, and completion is expected by September 2026.

THE LARGER TREND

Jefferson Health had a big 2024, opening the new patient-focused Honickman Center and unveiling a modern radiation oncology suite at Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital.

According to Dixieanne James, president, Central Region, Jefferson Health, these improvements are part of a commitment to both patients and the broader community.

"Led by feedback from our staff and patients, investments were prioritized to address areas with the greatest need and ensure improved convenience, accessibility, and care delivery," said James.
