Maimonides Health is merging with the NYC Health + Hospital System.

This allows Maimonides Health to become a part of the city’s healthcare system, pending final legal and regulatory approval.

The partnership will also allow Maimonides to adopt a new EHR, Epic, and access a higher Medicaid rate, according to the announcement Monday by NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Dr. Mitchell Katz, Maimonides Health CEO Ken Gibbs and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is supporting the partnership with a $2.2 billion grant over five years that officials said protects safety net care in Brooklyn.

Patient care is expected to continue uninterrupted during the transition.

The partnership is expected to be complete before April 1, 2026. At that point, Maimonides will be part of the NYC Health + Hospitals system.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Maimonides has been in financial distress as it treats a substantial number of patients who are covered through Medicaid, according to the New York Post.

Maimonides Health is a Brooklyn healthcare system with three hospitals and more than 80 community-based sites. By joining the public healthcare system, care provided by Maimonides facilities will be reimbursed at a higher rate by Medicaid, bolstering its financial position.

THE LARGER TREND

Hochul announced the grant on Oct. 16. The Health Care Safety Net Transformation Program encourages partnerships with safety-net institutions by providing capital and operating support, in addition to required regulatory flexibility.

This improves the sustainability of safety-net hospitals, according to a press release from NYC.

NYC Health + Hospitals’ board of directors voted unanimously to pursue a partnership on Nov. 20.
