Increased poverty in the suburbs has led to emergency departments in those areas becoming the primary source of care for poor and uninsured, Health Affairs study says.
Doctors had only been seeing about 10 patients a day in the emergency room, which is about one-third of what a hospital of that size needs to stay afloat.
In Texas, freestanding EDs tend to be clustered around major metropolitan centers where median income is close to $92,000.
